The simple answer is YES.
One of the biggest misconceptions following a road traffic accident is that you must use the
repair garage recommended by your insurance company.
In reality, the choice is yours.
Whether you've been involved in a fault or non-fault accident, UK motorists have the right to
choose where their vehicle is repaired. Unfortunately, many insurers will immediately try to
direct customers towards their own approved repair networks, often without explaining that
alternative options are available.
(The word “Approved” in this instance however means the insurer network bodyshop that has an agreed contract for
vastly reduced labour rates and limited parts suppliers to save the insurer as much money as possible. They also
often use “Green Parts” which sounds great apart from it actually means 2nd hand. We don’t believe this is in the best
interests of our clients.)
At Wigan Accident Management Services (WAMS), we help motorists throughout Wigan,
Ince, Standish, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Leigh, Hindley, Orrell, Skelmersdale, St Helens,
Chorley and the surrounding areas exercise that choice and have their vehicle repaired by
experienced local professionals.
Why Do Insurance Companies Recommend Their Own Repairers?
Insurance companies have agreements with national repair networks.
These repairers are chosen because they meet the insurer's commercial requirements, helping
to keep claim costs under control.
Whilst many insurer-approved repairers do excellent work, the reality is that they are working to
the insurer's timescales and commercial arrangements—not necessarily yours.
Using your own repairer can often provide:
• Better customer service
• Faster communication
• Greater flexibility
• Local accountability
• Repairs carried out by technicians you can actually speak to
• A business that works for you, not the insurer
Do I Have The Legal Right To Choose My Own Repairer?
YES
If your vehicle requires repairs following an accident, you are entitled to nominate the repairer
of your choice with the exception of Direct Line Motability customers who are at fault.
Your insurer may explain the benefits of using one of their approved repair centres, but they
cannot simply force you to use one if your policy allows repair elsewhere. Some insurers may
charge between £100 and £250 for you using a non-network repairer for your at fault repair. If
this is the case WAMS will cover the entire fee so it costs you nothing to instruct us.
If another driver caused the accident, you also have the option of allowing an accident
management company such as WAMS to manage the entire claim on your behalf.
That means:
• Vehicle recovery
• Repair management
• Engineer assessments
• Courtesy or hire vehicle (where applicable)
• Liaising with insurers
• Progress updates
• Returning your vehicle once repairs are complete
All designed to make the claims process as stress-free as possible.

Will Choosing My Own Repairer Cost Me More?
NO
In many cases, particularly following a non-fault accident, repairs, recovery costs and
replacement vehicle costs are recovered from the at-fault driver's insurer.
Every claim is different, which is why obtaining professional advice as early as possible is
important.
At WAMS we'll explain your available options before any work begins.
Why Local Repairers Often Deliver Better Customer Service
Choosing a trusted local repair centre means you're not just another claim number.
You'll benefit from:
• Direct contact with your repair team
• Regular progress updates
• Easier collection and delivery arrangements
• Local reputation and accountability
• Friendly, knowledgeable staff
• Support throughout your claim
For motorists across Wigan and the North West, that's exactly what WAMS has built its
reputation on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my insurance company insist I use their repairer?
Usually no. While insurers may strongly recommend their approved network, you can often
choose your preferred repairer depending on your policy and the circumstances of your claim.
Will using my own repairer invalidate my insurance?
No. Choosing your own repairer does not automatically invalidate your insurance policy.
What if the accident wasn't my fault?
If another driver caused the collision, you may have additional options available, including
accident management services that can arrange repairs, vehicle recovery and replacement
vehicles whilst recovering costs from the at-fault insurer where appropriate.
